We sat down with Asia Clarke, the founder and designer of WILDMOON to get her take on style.
How do you define your personal style?
I would define my personal style as “honey-dip donut eating afro-goddess who lives in comfort and practices making magic.” I would also like to add that I am a hipster of sorts, in that I regret putting all my Baby Phat gear from the early 2000’s to salvation army.
What are your biggest influences?
Biggest influences are the interstellar movements of the moon and stars. Sometimes I’m in love and sometimes I’m in mourning but I am always making jewelry. I am inspired by traditional African and Afro-Caribbean jewelry, but also by modern architecture and geometric patterns. Also, tumblr rules.
What inspires you?
All people everywhere who prioritize being unique are inspiring to me…
How do you choose what to wear in the morning?
I am a perfectionist on the low who is so serious about time management so I never choose what to wear in the morning. I plan from the night before and I almost always wear the first thing that comes to mind, weather permitting, because my intuition usually knows best.
What is fashion to you?
Not much but a two-syllable word. I kinda don’t know if I like modern fashion as a movement so much. Yea its fashion its creative. But sometimes it is hella bougie and classist. Often it’s about trendsetting bullshit to sell and make money and put others down for having not. It is art, but I don’t like the exclusivity and hierarchy that fashion sometimes implies and I certainly don’t shop at Holts ever.
I am about all about self-decoration. I think true fashion is (or should be) self-decoration out of self-love, and the desire to be admired in your community. There is nothing wrong with the desire to be admired. It is not entirely vain and soulless. But to those who are interested in being fashionable, it ought to be out of the need to express and convey that self-love. Does it make you feel good? OK good, then wear it. Self-decoration, no matter how extravagant or subtle, is a noble and timeless expression of proud uniqueness.
